The parade is the performance, but I wanted to be backstage before the event.. a more singular, more intimate experience. I wanted photos of the people inside the costumes.

Everyone was very friendly, happy to be photographed by this crazy gringo, who insisted on photographing them first without their masks or headpieces in place.

Permanent hearing loss is the tragic fate of those sweet young boys seated on the back of each truck, all so delighted with their privileged vantage hardly a meter away from those banks of speakers.

Every evening I hear the cuetes, the aerial quarter sticks of dynamite, exploding right overhead. I've learned to brace myself when I hear the one second of whistling that sounds between their launch and detonation.

We live in a complex time. Globalization, the internet and digitization have great advantages, but it also makes it easier for us to be overwhelmed by a large amount of information (and misinformation).

On many levels of our reality, imbalance and confusion proliferate. As a counterflow to the maelstrom of these stimuli, it seems to me that painting, with its sobriety and grandeur, is not only important, but necessary.

Painting offers a moment of pause, of observation, of a certain intimacy. It is, therefore, a resource to reinvigorate our contemplative capacity.

This can contribute to the implementation of a change towards a more constructive way of being in the world, where we come closer to our own human nature and enter into a healthier relationship with planetary nature.

Vivimos en una época compleja. La globalización, el internet y la digitalización tienen grandísimas ventajas, pero también facilita que nos avasalle una gran cantidad de información (y desinformación).

En muchos niveles de nuestra realidad prolifera el desequilibrio y la confusión. Como contraflujo a la vorágine de esos estímulos, me parece que la pintura, con su sobriedad y su grandeza, no sólo es importante sino necesaria.

La pintura ofrece un momento de pausa, de observación, de cierta intimidad. Es, por lo tanto, un recurso posible para revigorizar nuestra capacidad contemplativa.

Eso puede contribuir a la implementación de un cambio hacia una manera más constructiva de estar en el mundo, donde nos acerquemos a nuestra propia naturaleza humana y entablemos una relación más sana con la naturaleza planetaria.
